The Society was founded in 1973, and so is now approaching its 50th anniversary.

Originally called Lower Test Valley Archaeological Study Group, and still maintaining an interest in archaeology, in practice the Society is more concerned with history, and so now  uses the more meaningful name Romsey Local History Society. The LTVAS Group name remains important though, it is the name on  the Society's registration as a charity and on its bank account. Our archaeologist members would no doubt say that archaeology  is what  underpins history, and so this situation is only right and proper!
